London-based MC J Spades is set to release his debut single ‘Slick Rick’ featuring UK rap heavyweights Tinie Tempah and Professor Green. The track is produced by Beat Boss and set for release in March 2015. Alongside Slick Rick, J Spades will also release a highly-anticipated new Mixtape in March from his
MMMP series. The third in the series will be: GRT ‘Get Rich Together’ /MMMP3.
The Hackney-based rapper has supported N-Dubz rapper Dappy on tour, and has collaborated with US artist Waka Flocka on ’3000′, which appeared on his MMMP 2 mixtape He performed at Wireless with Naughty Boy in 2013 and has opened shows for US rappers French Montana and 2 Chainz. In November. In late 2014 J Spades featured on Naughty Boy track ‘ Do It Big’, which was added to BBC Radio 1 Xtra’s B List.
J Spades (real name Marvin Sterling) moved to Jamaica as a child, where he found the setting much more laid-back than London. He went to school in Kingston until returning to the UK at the age of 15 and finding home in the busy borough of Hackney, East London.
With the musical gene running through his family, his Dad is the legendary reggae artist Josey Wales, who has worked with acts including Shaggy and Shabba Ranks. As well as his Dad being a huge inspiration, which you can hear throughout his music, he also learnt about the reality of the music industry: ‘As I got into my late teens I started to come to terms with the fact that my Dad didn’t make as much money from music as
I thought he would have, so I guess that’s kind of always haunted me.”
When he’s not riding his motorbike around the streets of London, J Spades is making music. No stranger to the UK underground rap scene, the downloads for his much-hyped More Money More Pagans (MMMP) mixtape series have reached over 200,000, and his Youtube views have reached over 9 million views, illustrating his huge popularity.
The first instalment of his MMMP mixtape series was received well by underground radio stations and DJs including Charlie Sloth, Tim Westwood, Semtex and Kojo, and blogs such as SBTV, MTV and GRM Daily.
