Recently we have had some extremely cold weather, with temperatures reaching the minus numbers and blankets of snow sweeping the UK. It’s so important that we protect our skin during these weather conditions. Here are some tips that you can use to keep your skin protected, nourished, and healthy.

Moisturise daily

Moisturisers are really important for retaining strong and healthy skin. Remember to moisturise other parts of your body not just your face. It’s easy to forgot about your hands, feet, elbows, and other areas that can become dry and cracked especially during colder weathers.

TIP: Always take a look at the ingredients of a moisturiser before purchasing to ensure that it is compatible with your skin type. If you have dry to normal skin, then petroleum or cream-based moisturisers are better than lotions. Whereas, if you have sensitive skin, choose a moisturiser without fragrance or lanolin.

Avoid long, hot showers

Now this is going to sound strange but bare with me! It may be so tempting to have a piping hot bath/shower, especially when you’ve been out in the cold. However it is not as beneficial to your skin as you may think! While it can feel great in the winter, it can strip your skin of important oils. When possible, use warm or lukewarm water instead (even when you wash your face or hands).

Stay hydrated

I know I’m like a broken record but the answer to most of any problems we experience with our skin such as dryness, fatigued, or cracked skin can all be improved by simply drinking water.

Drinking 8-9 glasses of water will keep you hydrated internally and also help the kidney to function better. Ensuring this amount of water in the system allows our skin to maintain its moisture, elasticity, and overall health.

Lotil, a British brand is such a versatile skin product and it has been around for more than 100 years. Not only is it perfect for the cold season – it can be used for blisters, burns, soothe insect bites and even help symptoms of eczema and psoriasis. The cream is thick and absorbs into the skin quickly and is not greasy.

Ingredients contain lanolin which help skin retain moisture, oleic acid and glycerine. These ingredients together super hydrate dry skin and reinvigorate the healthy skin function with the cream acting as a barrier to the skin.

Lotil can also be used after shaving to help sooth sore skin and even as a soap replacement for those with very sore skin.

A 114ml tub of Lotil can be bought for under £7.00 from Independent retailers and 50ml for under £4.00
