So, 2015 has flown by and 2016 is already upon us. It’s time for a new job and you don’t know where to start. No one actually enjoys the chore of job searching but unfortunately it is a must. Jan-Marie has a few tips to get you on your way. New year? New job!

Plan and prepare to succeed:

  • Ensure you set targets for the year, month and week ahead. Fail to plan and you plan to fail. Forward planning is an essential step in progressing in anything in life. Set realistic deadlines and stick to them!


  • Figure out what your strengths and weaknesses are. The more you understand about yourself, the more likely it is that you will get satisfaction from your work-life. This also provides a guide to the type of job role you will succeed in which will ultimately have a good impact on your general happiness.

Update your CV:

  • This is essential. Think back to all your recent experiences which developed transferrable skills to take into your next job. Have you completed any training courses or taken on extra roles at work? If so, list them.

Online branding:

  • You are your own brand. It’s not only what people see in the physical, increasingly, this extends to the online sphere also. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter etc are all extensions of you. Be careful what you post on these social media platforms as some employers do their research on potential employees.

Network, network, network:

  • Ever heard of the saying “your network is your net-worth”? Connect with the right people and you are already on your way to success. Your network determines the opportunities you are exposed to and can open doors which would have otherwise remained closed. This is one of the most powerful ways to support career advancement.

Interview prep:

  • Many find they get to the stage of the interview then nothing happens for a while and suddenly they find themselves back at the beginning. This is a result of a good CV but a poor interview. Ensure you research the company; develop anecdotes and examples to demonstrate the skills you have listed on your CV and practice responding to interview questions.

Finally, when you do get that job, remember that there may be further training you have to undertake. Stay positive. You got this!
