The global pandemic has almost made us a nation of homebodies. Whether working from home, on furlough or just being sensibly cautious, the need for home entertainment and the escapism it brings has never been more vital to our daily lives, which may have led you to search for TV and broadband deals that meet your new domestic situation. Whether you’ve found one or are still searching, here’s a run-down of some of the essential TV you should be checking out, along with a few games for good measure.

Netflix
With the Emmys around the corner, we couldn’t start without some Netflix contenders for essential viewing entertainment. For those of you needing some humour at the moment, “Dead to Me” has plenty – of the dry variety! A great female-led cast sees two disparate characters brought together by grief and circumstance, with as many laughs as there are shocks – season three is in the pipeline.
If drama’s your thing, look no further than the excellent “Unorthodox”, about a Jewish woman fleeing abroad from an arranged marriage in Brooklyn. Can she escape her past, and will there be a second series? “Ozark”, too, is worth a mention for the crime drama-buffs out there, with season four – billed as the final season – due out in 2021, so there’s plenty of time to catch up with the first three.
HBO
Graphic novel fans will love the adaptation of Alan Moore’s “Watchmen”, a series which has garnered the greatest number of Emmy nominations this year with 26. The series is seen as a sequel to the DC Comics set of novels with thematic parallels running between it and the Black Lives Matter movement. It’s nothing if not relevant and thought provoking.
Amazon Prime
Prime’s comedy offering of “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” proved very popular and will be binged on again after its 20 Emmy nominations. It’s the story of a woman, whose husband suddenly leaves her, reinventing herself in the male-dominated world of stand-up comedy; hard enough doing it today, just try doing it in 1950s New York! Season four is out later this year, giving us even more entertainment.
Disney+
Disney Plus’s “The Mandalorian” will satisfy Star Wars fans and delight newcomers. Set five years after the events of “Return of the Jedi” and the fall of the Empire, it’s a space western centred around a bounty hunter’s adventures in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far beyond the authority of the New Republic.
Gaming
Gaming has thrived during the pandemic, immersing players in worlds where they feel some semblance of control. Multiplayer set-ups are more popular than ever and we’re recommending “Destiny 2” and “Rainbow Six Siege”, while “Minecraft” offers an alternative to the killing and death with the possibility of building a beautiful new world. Now that’s timely!
