Change of weather means it’s also time to change your wardrobe! Thankfully, last week I had the pleasure of meeting a creative designer in my hometown island of Sint Maarten. I was introduced to a fresh Fall favourite– CROCHET. I’m absolutely obsessed with this trend!
‘Kai: Design & Production’ focuses specifically on crocheted fashion apparel. Her colourful designs follow symmetrical patterns that have attained recognition throughout the Caribbean. Due to the cooler climate here in Europe, it is a fantastic Fall essential as it provides just the right amount of warmth, with an overdose of style. Here is one of her pieces following a close concept to that of French Connection’s ‘Fast Wilma Lace’ dress.
Kai Concave Dress: $80
FCUK: $248
Whilst working in Sint Maarten I was also involved in some promotion for Kai. I therefor shot her pieces with a local photographer whose appearance alone was overwhelming – as it followed the criteria of a Ford model. In this case, beauty lies in the eye of the photographer. He was featured on the cover of Sailing Magazine’s September issue… wait, what am I talking about again? Oh yeah, crocheting!
Kai Colour Burst Poncho: $120
This trendy essential has been spotted on the runway for Fall ’13 collections, ranging from luxury brands such as Chanel, Dior Couture, etc. However more affordable pieces are available from brands such as Free People at a staggering sale price of just $88.

Like Kai, crocheting is best done by those whom primarily specialize in it. A great example is the crochet neck warmers ruffled intricately below by designer Lyuba Yianni. Following flowers, fantasy and fun, her scarves will add a touch of class to any simplistic cardigan. ‘Lyubava Crochet’ pieces are made to order at an affordable price (just under $7) via Etsy, Ravelry, and Craftsy.
