Cleaning your pores sounds easier said than done when you don’t know what causes them to become clogged or how to reduce their appearance.

So your pores are small openings in the skin that releases oils and sweat. If your pores appear larger, it may be because of increased sebum production, this causes oily skin. Although you cannot get rid of your pores, there are ways to reduce the size and appearance of them, whilst cleaning them.

Cleaning your pores allows the skin to breathe and rejuvenate new, healthy oils. It is not necessary for everyone to clean their pores, they’re designed to clean themselves. However, if you struggle with excess build-up which causes breakouts, then these tips should help clear your skin!

A deep exfoliation of the skin helps to unclog pores. For the best results use an exfoliating scrub, combined with an electric cleansing device. This will deeply penetrate the pores and help remove any blockages. It is important not to exfoliate daily, once or twice a week will effectively unclog your pores without damaging or tearing your skin.

By exfoliating your skin, you can help remove old, dead skin cells to reveal the healthy, new skin underneath. Exfoliators can cause microtears in the skin which could lead to further breakouts or damage, so it’s important you stick to natural ingredients, preferably a sugar scrub.

Water-based products

If you suffer from oily skin, then choosing water-based products to use on your face will avoid getting extra oil into your pores. Avoid oil-based products at all costs, these will lead to excess oil on the skin which will further enlarge the appearance of your pores.

Always remove your make-up

I cannot stress this enough, always remove your make-up at the end of the day, especially before you go to sleep. Sleeping with your make-up on can lead to pores becoming blocked. This is because makeup, oil, and bacteria build up in the pores.

If you’re short on time, then make-up wipes will be fine. However, make-up wipes can cause early signs of ageing as they can be quite harsh and rough on the skin. Micellar water or a liquid make-up remover is most recommended as it is kinder to the skin, and fully penetrates your pores.

It may sound silly to recommend moisturising oily skin further. However, after you wash and pat your skin dry (always pat, scrubbing your skin dry removes any moisture applied to the skin),  moisturiser will hydrate and soften your skin. This allows the sebum to penetrate deeper into the skin, rather than sitting in the pores on the surface.

Pore vacuums

Pore vacuums are mini vacuums that work by using suction to deeply clean out your pores, making them a lifesaver for those with constantly clogged pores. It is to be noted that they won’t get the deeply embedded blackheads, BUT they work incredibly well at getting clogged pores.

Pore vacuums work best when your skin is warm/fresh out of the shower. So your pores are open and more relaxed. They’re also great as they avoid the inevitable nail marks from trying to clear them yourself!

BaeVac is a pore vacuum designed by SilkyBae that works brilliantly, it extracts all the gunk and dirt embedded in your skin, right before your eyes. You won’t be sure whether you’re amazed at how well it works or mortified that the dirt it extracts was ever on your skin!

BaeVac by Silky Bae RRP £44.99 (currently £22.99)

These are some tips that can help you clean your pores and visibly reduce the appearance of them on your skin!
