When it comes to skin care, it’s all too easy to neglect our eyes as an area to protect. I’ve found that eye creams are often an after thought in my skin care routine, or I’ve not wanted to invest in a product because it’s another unnecessary extra, compared to toners and moisturisers.
Yet, the skin around our eyes is the most delicate area on the face as it is incredibly thin, so it’s one of the most important places to look after. Eye creams can offer protection from the elements, prevent dark circles and keep your wrinkles at bay.
Different eye creams offer different results, so it’s important to work out what’s best for your skin type. I promise you, once you start using eye creams, you’ll never go back!
What makes this product special?
My current product of choice is Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado. It offers gentle hydration to the under-eye area.
Avocado Oil
Avocados are high in vitamin E which is an antioxidant – antioxidants are important to help protect the skin from free radicals, which can damage skin cells – therefore it works to protect the skin from ageing. Plus, Avocado Oil is known to be the most moisturising of any fruit oil, helping to restore the natural moisture of the skin.
Beta-Carotene
Is a naturally derived antioxidant predominantly found in many orange/red vegetables such as carrots. It is used in Vitamin A production, another one of your vital vitamins.
Shea butter is widely used as a natural ingredient in skin care products for it’s hydrating and cleansing properties. It protects skin from dehydration, restores skin’s suppleness and improves the appearance of dry skin.
How do I apply the product?
As the most delicate area of the face, the under-eye area is particularly sensitive when it comes to the absorption of skin care products. So where you place the cream is incredibly important. Unlike make up, which sits on top of the skin, an eye cream will be absorbed. Therefore I’d recommend that you dab the cream along the orbital bone (to find this, press gently around the eye area and you’ll feel where the lower part of your eye socket is) – avoid applying directly under the eyes as this can cause more damage then good. Kiehl’s even promises that this particular ‘unique concentrated texture does not migrate into your eyes’ making it even more of a safe choice.
What do I like most about the product?
Kiehl’s eye cream really is good enough to eat – the avocado extract gives the cream a subtle sweet scent and the creamy texture feels so satisfying on my skin. The formula is thicker than other eye creams that I’ve tried, which I’ve found makes it less oily on application. The cream takes 5 minutes to settle into the skin, leaving behind a mild cooling sensation.
Results?
Since using Kiehl’s eye cream I’ve noticed that the skin around my eyes really has become a lot brighter and firmer. I’m certain that the cream is definitely working to protect my skin from the elements and ageing. It’s worth noting, however, that this cream won’t remove any dark circles underneath your eyes overnight – I have very fair skin so dark circles are a lot more noticeable and even with Kiehl’s cream, I still use a coloured concealer to hide these every day. However, the cream definitely works to keep the surrounding area healthier against free radicals. I’m hoping that later down the line, in keeping this routine, I’ll start to see a change.
Price?
At £20 for 14g, this is a product that you’ll want to save for a payday treat, however it’s totally worth it. You really don’t need to use much of the product at a time, a small fingertip-sized dab will do. With the natural ingredients packed into this cream, I’d definitely choose this over cheaper high street products, as I find they tend to be filled with harsher chemicals that aren’t as kind of the skin. When it comes to investing in skin care products, it’s definitely a case of you get what you pay for.
