On the 7th March, Amor magazine headed down to PRS Music headquarters in Kings Cross.  PRS for Music- The UK’s leading copyright collective together with Girls I Rate brought in International Women’s Day in style. The movement Girls I Rate is an organisation which creates opportunities for young women in the music and entertainment industry.

Hosted by Rebecca Judd, presenter of Beats 1 and 4music, the night began with an empowering speech from BRIT Award-winning, Grammy-nominated songwriter, activist and founder of Girls I Rate, Carla Marie Williams. Carla has written for artists such as Beyonce, Sean Paul and Britney Spears

PRS for Music statistics showed that there was only one female included in the list of the top 20 highest earning songwriters and music composers in the UK last year.

Carla alongside Claire Jarvis, PRS for Music Director of Membership. spoke about the gender disparity within the music industry and the power of women to make a change.

This paved the way for a fiery line up of four female game changers who are hotting things up in the music industry.

The first up was Amaira, at only 15 years old, she took to the stage like a veteran.  The singer/ rapper won CBBC children’s talent competition show ‘Got What It Takes.’ And has additionally performed at Radio 1’s Big Weekend and represented Hackney on stage in New York.

Next was a turn up set by East London based rapper, singer and actress Paigey Cakey. The rapper has supported musical artists such as Lil Kim, Eve, The Game and Stormzy.

Miraa May followed, proudly representing her Algerian roots. The singer performed several tracks from her new EP ‘Care Package’ such as ‘Sad‘ and ‘Nobody‘ The artist recently had the opportunity to record at American Producer Salaam Remi’s Miami studio, who has  worked with the likes of Nas and Amy Winehouse, to work on her upcoming EP, N15

Last but not least of the performers was singer/songwriter  Etta Bond. Steadily becoming a household name for soul in the UK, she has been named one of their Future 50 rising stars. The singer performed a sultry set for the night including songs such as Love Me Up and  Surface. Etta Bond will also be embarking on her European Tour where she will be performing songs off of her double sided album ‘He’s Not Mine’, ‘He’s Mine.’

The fun filled night was ended by a DJ set from Ellie Prohan. The Persian Radio Broadcaster, Events Host and International DJ.
