This weeks #WCW goes to Rhona Eskander, who is a Dentist and certified Inman Aligner and Invisalign provider. She also provides facial aesthetics, (which you can learn more about below) and won Best Young Dentist at the Private Dentistry Awards 2016.

What made you become a dentist?

Having been brought up in a medical environment I was always exposed to healthcare. However, what I loved about dentistry is that you build a strong relationship with your clients. You see them biannually or more. Dentistry also enables you to have an artistic flare. Cosmetic dentistry can be life changing and that is the kind of dentistry I wanted to provide.

Do you face any issues being a female in the sector?

No, the dental profession acknowledges and gratifies both sexes and there are many influential women in dentistry who have made a difference.

You also offer facial aesthetics, what are their benefits?

Facial aesthetics are often used to soften the expression lines and define facial contours. For example, dermal fillers can be used as beautification or restoration treatments; for example, it can be used to enhance lips and cheeks or restore the volume that has been lost. There are, however other uses for facial aesthetic treatments aside from anti-aging. For example, botulinum toxin can be used to help treat bruxism- grinding of the teeth. It can be placed in the jaw muscle and used to relax them. Additionally, botulinum toxin can be used to treat gummy smiles by relaxing the hyperactive muscles which cause lip elevation.

What are the top 5/10 myths about dental hygiene?

  1. Myth: Brush after breakfast
You should always brush before breakfast to ensure that the teeth are protected from the acid attack of breakfast foods
  2. Myth: Charcoal toothpaste whitens teeth
There is no scientific basis for this. Only peroxide treatments whiten teeth
  3. Myth: Coconut pulling whitens teeth
Again there is no scientific gravitas for this. It is simply a dental myth
  4. Myth: Non fluoride/ herbal toothpastes are effective
The decline in dental decay may be attributed to the incorporation of fluoride in toothpastes. The herbal formulas don’t contain fluoride so the effect is taken away
  5. Myth: Teeth straightening is only for children and young people
This is a fairly common misconception. It’s never too late to straighten your teeth, and in fact more and more adults are having treatment later on in life. There are a number of options available beyond traditional wire and bracket braces (often referred to as train tracks). These include lingual braces, and clear aligner systems, such as Invisalign, which uses a series of custom made clear ‘aligners’ which gradually reposition teeth over the course of treatment. Treatments such as Invisalign also have the added advantage of being discreet, as the aligners are clear, they are virtually invisible when worn.
